Everglades Snook
Fly Fishing Everglades Snook
It is believed that snook originated in Central America and climate change eventually triggered a push northwards into peninsular Florida where they have thrived for thousands of years. Snook are a physiologically unique fish for a couple of reasons. They are a hermaphroditic fish. They start their lives off as males. As they mature, they undergo changes that turn them into females. They are also estuary dependent. Snook need both salt and fresh water to survive. As juveniles, snook spend most of their time in fresh water until they mature and stay almost exclusively in high saline environments.
Snook of all sizes can be targeted year-round in Southwest Florida. During the spring months of March, April, and May snook can be found everywhere from the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico all the way back into the freshwater creeks and lakes of the Everglades backcountry. It is believed that snook spawn in the nearshore Gulf waters during the summer months (June through October) with the peak of spawning activity being July through September. During this time snook congregate on the beaches and in the passes and provide anglers the unique opportunity to target them in crystal clear water over white sand. The fall and winter months (November through February) spread the snook out in the shallow water of the Everglades where they can be targeted while waiting to ambush their next meal and warming up in the winter sun.

Other Popular Everglades Fish
Redfish
Do not underestimate the awesomeness of the redfish. They are one of the heartiest species of fish that inhabit the waters of the Gulf coast and Southeastern United States. The Everglades is their Sothernmost range and a great place to chase them.
Tarpon
Tarpon are the showboat of the Everglades. Their massive size, willingness to eat flies, and acrobatic nature make them a fan favorite and the reason why South Florida fishing guides are so busy between the months of March and June.
