Fly Fishing Everglades Redfish
Redfish are one of the most resilient species to call Southwest Florida home. After being overfished commercially for decades, protections were put into place in 2007 declaring redfish a gamefish effectively killing the commercial market for them. Since then, redfish have flourished and can be found in good numbers along the entire Gulf coast from Texas to the Everglades as well as in the Atlantic Ocean as far North as Massachusetts.
The Everglades is an estuary where juvenile redfish grow fast in its fertile waters. Redfish can be targeted year-round in the Everglades and most of them are between four and eight pounds. They are voracious feeders that will feed on crabs, shrimp, and baitfish in every level of the water column. During the spring and summer months (March through May) redfish can be found and caught almost everywhere there is a strong tidal influence and relatively salty water. The summer months (June through October) sees the redfish population congregate near the Gulf edge where they use the beaches, passes, and inlets to feed while keeping easy access to the deeper cooler water of the Gulf of Mexico to escape the heat when needed. After a long hot summer, the cooling temperatures of the fall and winter months (November through February) makes redfish very active and eager to feed in the shallows. Some of the lowest tides of the year are also some of the best Everglades redfishing. It is not uncommon to sight fish ten or more redfish per day in less than a foot of water.

Other Popular Everglades Fish
Snook
Sight fishing a big Everglades snook with a fly rod in shallow water is without a doubt one of the greatest hunts in North America. Snook inhabit almost every corner of the Everglades, yet their wariness and tendency to allude anglers adds to their appeal.
Tarpon
Tarpon are the showboat of the Everglades. Their massive size, willingness to eat flies, and acrobatic nature make them a fan favorite and the reason why South Florida fishing guides are so busy between the months of March and June.
